San Diego once had a reputation for outdoor gay cruising, but that side of the scene has largely faded. In the past, places like Balboa Park and parts of the beaches were well-known meeting grounds for men seeking discreet encounters.
Over time, increased policing, redevelopment of public spaces, and the rise of digital apps shifted cruising out of the parks and into private spaces or online. Today, San Diego doesn’t really have a central cruising area. What remains is more historical memory than active scene, with most of the city’s LGBTQ+ life centered on Hillcrest’s bars, clubs, and community venues.
